Tour of Rome and The Amalfi Coast

Today we depart from the United States for Rome. Enjoy superb in-flight services, entertainment and meals as we cross the Atlantic Ocean.

We arrive at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. Immediately after Passport Control, meet a representative who will assist us to pick up our luggage. Proceed to our private bus that will transfer us to our hotel in Rome. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Overnight – Rome (D)

Breakfast in hotel. We begin the day with a visit to Vatican City, a state and a city all in one. Visit the Vatican Museum, gaze at Michelangelo’s ceiling fresco masterpiece depicting the history of the creation in the Sistine Chapel. View the vast collection of art and antiquities, the Candelabra Gallery, Map Gallery and the Tapestries. We will also visit St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square. In the afternoon, we visit the Coliseum and view the adjacent Roman Forum. From here we drive to the San Callisto Catacombs. Time permitting, we will view the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. In the evening, we will enjoy local cuisine in a nearby restaurant.

Breakfast in your hotel. This morning we leave Rome and take the route through the regions of Lazio and Campania. We stop for a visit to the Casamari Abbey which lies on a rocky hill sloping down to the torrent Amaseno. Continue along the enchanting coast to Sorrento. Before we reach Sorrento, we stop for a visit to the Montecassino Abbey, the oldest monastery in the world. Check into our hotel.

Breakfast in hotel. Today we take an exciting excursion to the world’s most famous and beautiful island – The Isle of Capri. We depart for the island on a hydrofoil jet. Explore Capri’s historic legacy and natural beauty. In the 19th Century, Alex Munthe, an eccentric Swedish doctor, built the beautiful Villa San Michele atop the ruins of Capri’s Roman palaces and villas. A shady garden offers splendid views of the island. Visit Piazza Umberto, where there are several open-air cafes. View the gardens of Augustus overlooking the famed Faraglioni Rocks and Marina Piccola where Grace Fields once lived. Time and weather permitting, an optional visit to the Blue Grotto is possible. In the evening, we will have a pizza party in a local restaurant.
Overnight – Sorrento (B,D)

Breakfast in hotel. Today we journey along the spectacular Amalfi coast from Positano to Ravello. We stop for a panoramic view up the road to view Positano with its white cubic houses. We stop in the historic town of Amalfi to visit the Cathedral and continue through deep ravines and majestic hills leading to lovely Ravello, dramatically overlooking the Gulf of Sorrento. Visit the 13th century Villa Rufolo. Return to our hotel.

Breakfast in hotel. In 79 AD, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the city of Pompeii in a blanket of ash and pumice stone. For centuries, the town lay abandoned until the well-preserved ruins were unearthed. We take a slow walk through ancient streets of Pompeii where we can see baths, forums and villas built by the Romans. Afterwards, we drive to Mt. Vesuvius which dominates the Bay of Naples and is the only active volcano on the European mainland. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner and a musical show in the Theatre of Sorrento depicting cultural roots through song and dance.

Breakfast in hotel. Depart for one of Italy’s most beautiful cities, Naples. Landmark sights include Teatro San Carlo, Italy’s oldest and largest opera house, and Castel Nuovo. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, where most of the treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum have been transferred for safe keeping. Return to our hotel.

Breakfast in hotel. Today is free for rest and relaxation on your own….Enjoy! In the evening, we will have our Farewell Gala Dinner in a local restaurant.
